The Hallen School would like to announce the addition of Family & Consumer sciences to our curriculum. Family & Consumer Sciences will focus on introducing our students to daily life skills including Money management, Nutrition & Dietary knowledge, and Cooking.

Book Nook

The Book Nook opened in September 1997. From the very start, it was planned, designed and set up with the assistance and creative input of the students.

The students that work in The Book Nook are actively involved in every aspect of the day-to-day operation of the store. They participate in the ordering, counting, sorting, pricing, displaying, and sales of all books and merchandise. During the course of the year, emphasis is placed on the development and maintenance of a positive work ethic. Continuous focus is placed on the establishment of skills necessary for working with supervisors, co-workers, and customers.

When in class, each student is involved in extensive record keeping on an ongoing basis. This includes recording and computing of payroll, recording of sales and inventory on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis, and, ultimately, the graphing of sales for the year, broken down by days of the week and months. All of the data are analyzed, assessed, and then used in the evaluation and determination of future sales and marketing.

The Book Nook is open every day. There are several hundred books and over 100 novelty items available. All books are $2.00. Novelty items range in price from 0.25¢ to $3.00.
